THE SONG MY ENEMIES SING – WINTER 2018

James Reich’s fifth novel The Song My Enemies Sing will be published by Anti-Oedipus Press in December, 2018. Editor D. Harlan Wilson has released some early publicity details, including praise from science fiction innovator Barry N. Malzberg, who calls the novel “absolutely astonishing!”

From the publisher:
We are excited to announce that AOP will publish James Reich’s novel The Song My Enemies Sing later this year. Science fiction legend Barry N. Malzberg had a lot to say about it:

“This is absolutely astonishing—Vermilion Sands meets its atrocity exhibition somewhere Beyond Apollo . . . It is a science fiction novel cunningly framed as a straight literary novel using the devices of science fiction and can be taken as either. It is both synchronously of course. Schrodinger’s Novel. . . . The opening is magnificent, tanked-out, tracked-down Ballard and then it simply flies in its variations on a theme through my work, through Clarke, through Bradbury, through Phil Dick; ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, this is a history of science fiction form, origin and development and it is merciless in its refusal to pander to the easier implications of its material. . . . The Song My Enemies Sing is from the first paragraph an absolute stunner.”

This is Reich’s fifth novel. It is his third publication with AOP after Soft Invasions and Mistah Kurtz! A Prelude to Heart of Darkness.

Taking its title from the ska classic by Joe Higgs and written in the vignette mode of Ray Bradbury’s The Martian ChroniclesThe Song My Enemies Sing is a surreal, disquieting science fiction novel  about interspecies communication, Mars colonization, Black Panthers and Afro-futurism, UFO close encounters and abductions, spiritual crisis, latent memories and missing time.
